Law School Debt: Your Questions Answered

In the next month, I’ll be hosting two Blog Talk Radio shows dealing with the price of law school and how it should factor into your decision to attend.

First, on March 30th at noon EST/9 a.m. PST, I’ll be speaking with Derek Roberti, PhD, JD, author of “Should I Go To Law School? The $100,000 Gamble” about “The Law School Decision.“ We will discuss all of the personal and financial questions you should be asking yourself as you contemplate law school. Derek, a 2001 graduate of Stanford Law School, will inspire you to think critically about your decision so you can be sure you’re making the right one. Here is the link to the show information on Blog Talk Radio.

Then, on April 14th at noon EST/9 a.m. PST, I’ll be hosting a show addressing Financial Aid considerations for law students. I will be speaking with Heather Jarvis, JD, a former capital criminal defense attorney who now helps people deal with crushing school loan debt. She will share pitfalls to watch out for and will give you information that will help you decide where to go to law school and how much to spend.

I will take live questions via chat during each of these shows, and if you can’t listen live, they will be available on the iTunes Ann Levine podcast library.

Income Based Repayment & Loan Forgiveness

One thing I urge my law school admission consulting clients to consider is the cost of law school, especially for those who hope to work in public interest law or other low-paying fields upon graduation from law school. One such client was good enough to share some of her research on the subject so that I might share it will readers of my blog.

Here’s a great link to the basic information about the recently enacted legislation to help graduates repay federal student loans.

Here is another link on FinAid.org with information about the Income Based Repayment legislation enacted in 2009.

Also, look into the scholarships offered by law schools specifically for those who plan to practice in the public interest. Here’s a shameless plug for an amazing scholarship program at my alma mater, the University of Miami School of Law’s Miami Law Scholars program. It’s not too late to apply!

Great Resource for Would-Be Public Interest Attorneys

Aaron at Equal Justice Works pointed out a great resource for those of you considering a career in public interest law – it’s a resource guide, but not a ranking, of law schools and their public interest offerings.

More Public Interest Loan Repayment News

Aaron at Equal Justice Works sent me this email today:

More info was announced today regarding the College Cost Reduction & Access Act. The U.S. Department of Treasury confirmed that loan forgiveness for public service under CCRAA is not taxable. Great news for lawyers planning on entering public service after law school! Visit the Equal Justice Works Blog for more info.

More on Loan Repayment and Forgiveness

Congratulations to Equal Justice Works on launching their blog this week. It already offers great resources for law school applicants and those considering a career in public interest law. Here’s the post about new legislation offering opportunities for law school loan repayment and forgiveness.

More Background on Law School Loan Forgiveness

Thanks so much to Austin at CALI PreLaw Blog for jumping on my bandwagon and publicizing Loan Repayment Assistance Programs (LRAPs). In today’ s post, he gives a great explanation of what LRAPs are and why they are important. Check it out.
